Who is Steve Supple?

Steve Supple - I Want to Create

I am by nature and experience, a designer. I have worked for newspapers, magazines, design firms and printers. I love to design. I design everything: even myself, and new ways of looking at things. I love to design origional concepts, including concepts about how to best understand and apply practical information to those who desire an active and rewarding creative life. I love the creative process.

I am always looking for the best ways to express myself in a modern world. I like to find ways to communicate in interesting ways.

But I also want to share with others what I am learning, who know they need to create, but need some help, like we all do.

I am based in Adelaide, The capital city of South Australia. A city of about a million people. Not a major city by world standards, but it is a beautiful, active and outgoing city. With lots of arts and cultural festivals.

But enough about me...

Who is this website for?

Everyone is born creative but this site is for anyone interested in creativity and innovation. So if you are an aspiring media professional or interested in a career as a visual or performing artist. It's for anyone interested in career, creativity and innovation. Are you an aspiring media professional or interested in a career as a visual or performing artist? Or is it your dream to be a successful designer, musician, songwriter, author, film maker, actor or any of the many other career avenues out there? Then I hope this is what you have been looking for.

But creativity has a broader meaning that goes far beyond these well known creative pursuits. Creativity is a way of looking at the world through new eyes and interacting in original ways. So if you are looking for ways to express yourself through the medium of your choosing, then you’re at the right place!

Everytime I use the word "Creativity" or "create". Understanding it's broader meaning will begin to unlock all the real possibilities that an active creative life can offer you, and the world around you.

What is this site all about?

Have you ever said to yourself, “i Need to Create”?

If you are anything like me, you have told yourself this almost every day.

If fact I have been so interested in ways of being more actively creative, that I have spent the past 10 years teaching myself about how to do just that.

But I also became just as interested in helping others to restart, develop and sustain their creative journeys.

This site is a response to a need. A need to create. Not everyone has this need. Or at least some don't know or remember that there was a conscious need in their past. Or at the very least, don't realise that just having a broader definition of creativitiy can have such quick and positive improvement in their lives. And how a creative person can make an improvement in the real world.

I don't want to just draw attention to this need to create. But also explain where it comes from, how this need to create tries to get our attention, but most importantly, how we can best respond to this need to create in our own unique way.

And the best ways to take this need to create seriously. And of course, to know the many benefits of living an actively creative life.

To do this I will need to talk about what is creativity and innovation. How we can identify what form of creative expression is best suited to your personality and other factors.

I would like to help you to discover, develop and perfect your own unique and personal creative direction.

A creative direction that is rewarding, sustainable and profitable.

Back in 1943, Abraham Maslow's well remembered work on human needs, wrote about this need to create.

He wrote:

The musician must make music,
the artist must paint, the poet must write,
if he is to ultimately be at peace with himself.
What a man can be he must be.

He talked mainly about the Hyrachy of human needs. He pictured it like a pyramid with 5 layers.

The bottom layer is the need for survival, then above that; the need for safety and security.

Then Love and belonging. Then esteem, and at the top, the need for self-actualisation.

I believe that the need to create is also a strong need in some people. Not just a need to sing or paint, but also a need to create a better way to survive. To create a safer and more secure envionment for ourselves. To create the conditions for more loving relationships and a greater sense of belonging. To create a plan of action that nutures our esteem. And lastly, to recognise that you must create a way to become the person you know you must be.

To respond to the need to create, better equips us to respond to all the other needs.

Creativity is firstly the process of forming new connections, associations or relationships between ideas, objects and people. So you can make original, relevant and interesting results.

Secondly, creativity is about re-purposing: To take something originally intended for one purpose and find a new use for it. You can re-purpose content, old ideas, situations and even yourself.

So you could say that connections are about multiple ingredients and re-purposing is about singular things used in a different context.

New connections / New context = Creativity.

Firstly, it is about YOU as a creative person. Creative development is not just about becoming better at a particular learned skill. It is more than improving your creative abilities. It is about combining all that is needed to become the most creative person that you can be. It's about recognising and achieving your creative potential. Creative development is the journey in that direction. To use a metaphor: It's more than learning the techniques of driving a car, it's about knowing what destination you are interested in getting to and finding the right vehicles to get you there.

  1. It's primarily a personal journey, but does include your role as a professional creative person.
  2. It's about content creation, not just learning technical skills. More about 'why' than just how.
  3. It's about creating yourself. Turning the design process on our selves.
  4. It's about understanding that creative process.
  5. How to recognise problems and define them, so a creative solution can be found?
  6. What are creative opportunities? How do you seek and find them?
  7. What are the needs of people? Have they a need for something new?
  8. Can something that already exists be made available to them? Is there a service that they will use?
  9. What are your interests, talents, personal highlights, view of the world, etc?
  10. What could your life's work or life's theme be? How do you design a purpose or role for life?
  11. How do you plan a sustainable creative future?
  12. What are the things that block or hinder creativity?
  13. How can creative communication be used as content? And how do audiences respond to it?
  14. What is Creative balance? What are it's benefits in regard to your developing creativity?
  15. What advice can creative people of the past centuries give about what fostered their achievements?
